Drinking Water and Stretching Can Prevent Running Injuries

The majority of runners dread incurring an injury that may force them to stop running or jogging. It is often necessary to temporarily stop the activity that led to the injury, which will allow ample time for healing. There are simple and effective methods that can be implemented which may help to prevent running injuries. These can include warming up and cooling down before and after running, which can consist of spending adequate time stretching the leg and foot muscles. It is also important to wear shoes that fit correctly, in addition to slowly increasing speed and mileage appropriately. Drinking plenty of water before, during, and after running can keep the body hydrated, which is crucial for healthy running. Some people enjoy getting routine massages, and this is helpful in keeping the muscles limber. If you would like more information about how to prevent running injuries, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can offer you helpful tips.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists of Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

How to Prevent Running Injuries

Many common running injuries are caused by overuse and overtraining. When the back of the kneecap starts wearing out and starts causing pain in your knee, this is commonly referred to as runner’s knee. Runner’s knee is a decrease in strength in your quadriceps and can occur if you’re not wearing properly fitted or supporting shoes. To prevent runner’s knee, focusing on hip strengthening is a good idea, as well as strengthening your quads to keep the kneecaps aligned.

What Are Some Causes of Running Injuries?
- One cause of a common running injury is called iliotibial band syndrome.
- Plantar fasciitis is also another common injury.
- Stress fractures can occur from overtraining, lack of calcium, or even your running style.

Best Ways to Prevent Running Injuries
- Wear footwear that fits properly and suits your running needs.
- Running shoes are the only protective gear that runners have to safeguard them from injury.
- Make a training schedule. Adding strengthening exercises as well as regular stretching can help keep you strong and limber and can lessen the possibility of injuries.
- Stretching keeps muscles limber; this will help you gain better flexibility.

Stretches for Flat Feet

Stretching the feet as part of one’s everyday foot care routine can yield significant benefits. For example, stretching the feet can improve stability, flexibility, and mobility. However, certain groups of individuals stand to benefit even more from frequently stretching the feet. Namely, individuals living with a foot condition known as flat feet may notice positive results from performing foot stretches. The reason for this is that certain stretches can strengthen the arch of the foot, resulting in a potential reduction in pain. Therefore, individuals with flat feet may consider performing towel scrunches, toe extensions, and heel raises. If you are someone looking to improve the general health of your feet through foot stretches, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for advice and treatment.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Atco, and Turnersville, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Who Is Prone to Getting Sesamoiditis?

The sesamoid bones are connected to other bones by tendons, and they are the only ones that are not connected to other bones by joints. They may also be found embedded in the muscles throughout the body, and two of them are located in the foot. They are found underneath the foot, and they help to move the big toe. Additionally, they support the weight of the body, and sesamoiditis may occur when the surrounding tendons become inflamed or irritated. Ballet dancers, runners, and baseball catchers may be prone to developing this condition, which can be a result of excess force that is placed on the feet while participating in these activities. People who have high arches or who have medical conditions, such as osteoarthritis, may get sesamoiditis, and the bones may become weakened. Common symptoms that can accompany this condition include bruising, swelling, and it may be difficult to straighten or bend the big toe. Treatment generally begins when the activity is stopped that caused this condition, and elevating the foot may reduce the swelling. If you have foot pain, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose sesamoiditis, and guide you toward the right treatment solutions.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact one of our podiatrists of Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

What Is Cellulitis?

Whenever an individual develops a wound on their feet and neglects to treat it properly, they could be setting themselves up for a case of cellulitis. Importantly, cellulitis is a type of bacterial infection that can affect the skin on the feet. As a result of cellulitis, an individual’s skin can become red, swollen, and painful. Although many different types of bacteria can cause this, it is commonly caused by group A Streptococcus. Many risk factors are associated with the development of cellulitis. For example, if an individual is overweight, then they might be at an increased risk of experiencing cellulitis in their feet. Also, a prevalence of swollen limbs could be a sign that cellulitis is on the horizon. If you are someone that is concerned with preventing cellulitis and other infections on the skin of the feet, then it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today for treatment.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Various Forms of Arthritis

There are several joints, tendons, and muscles that are found in each foot. When arthritis in the foot develops, it can affect mobility and the range of motion may be reduced. Common symptoms of arthritic feet can consist of swelling, pain, stiffness, and in severe cases, the joints may become deformed. There are three main types of arthritis that can affect the feet. One type is osteoarthritis (OA), which is gradual wear and tear as the aging process occurs. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is considered to be an autoimmune disease and is often accompanied by inflammation. It may cause the foot to eventually lose function. If an injury happens to the foot, post-traumatic arthritis may occur and can affect the cartilage between the joints. Arthritis may affect balance in the feet, possibly causing the patient to become unsteady. Managing arthritic feet may be done by engaging in low-impact activity, maintaining a moderate weight, and eating healthy foods. If you have foot pain, it is strongly suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose arthritis and offer the correct treatment solutions.

Causes of Pain in the Ball of the Foot

Pain in the ball of the foot is known as metatarsalgia. This type of pain is often the result of over-exercising, wearing shoes that are too tight or having arthritis. Some individuals might also have a natural foot shape that places more pressure on the ball of the foot. Other common conditions that lead to pain in the ball of the foot include sprains, Morton’s neuroma, and bunions. A Morton’s neuroma involves a compression of nerves in this area of the foot, and one might feel like they have a small pebble underfoot. A bunion is a hard, bony lump on the joint of the big toe. If you have pain in or near the ball of the foot, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and recommended treatment.

Techniques for Preventing Falls

Falling can be a devastating experience. The feet and ankles can be affected which may result in a fractured or sprained ankle. Severe falls can leave an individual seriously injured and require a hospital stay. Falling often happens in the household, and there are simple fall prevention techniques that can be implemented. These can include improving lighting and removing frayed rugs and clutter. It is beneficial to have grab bars installed in the shower and toilet area, as well as a non-slip bath mat. It is beneficial to have routine physicals and eye examinations to monitor existing medications and eyeglasses. If you would like additional information about ways to prevent falls, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide effective tips.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Painful Gout

There is no mistaking the cause of pain when it comes to having gout, a form of arthritis that affects the joints in the big toe. Eating foods that have high levels of purines may lead to getting gout. The purines break down into uric acid, and an excess of this can build up in the foot in the form of crystals. These can lodge in specific joints, such as the big toe, and can cause debilitating pain. These types of foods can include shellfish, red meat, and drinks that are made with large amounts of sugar. Research has shown that having a family history or being obese can make some patients prone to getting gout. Common symptoms can include redness, the affected joints may be swollen, and it can be warm when touched. Relief may be found when healthy eating habits are implemented. This can consist of drinking plenty of water daily, and consuming fruits and vegetables. If you suffer from gout, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you with relief tactics and provide helpful prevention tips.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Stretches for Sever’s Disease

Children who develop heel pain may be checked for Sever’s disease. It is a condition that can affect children and young teenagers who frequently participate in running and jumping activities. Limping may often be the first sign your child may have this condition, as it may help to reduce the heel pain that accompanies Sever’s disease. This affects the growth plate in the heel, and it is a result of the bones growing faster than the muscles and surrounding tissue. It generally happens during a growth spurt, and performing specific stretches and exercises may help to reduce the pain. The heel and calf muscles can be stretched by standing on a step, and lowering the heels one at a time until a gentle stretch is felt. It is important to practice these stretches while in minimal pain, or the inflammation may increase. A towel stretch can be effective for pain reduction in Sever’s disease. This is done by sitting down with the legs out, wrapping a towel lengthwise around the feet, and pulling the toes slowly toward the body. This stretch can be repeated several times after holding for 30 seconds. If you notice your child is favoring one leg over the other, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose and treat Sever’s disease.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Diabetes May Cause Nerve Damage in the Feet

Most people associate diabetes with a blood sugar and insulin imbalance, and that is certainly true. But diabetes can also affect the nervous system, causing a secondary condition termed neuropathy. This is nerve damage that restricts the ability of the peripheral nervous system to send accurate messages to the extremities. The effects of neuropathy in diabetics are commonly experienced in the feet. Symptoms often include a feeling of pins and needles in the feet or toes, pain that is felt especially at night, and numbness. The result of this nerve damage can be the cause of even more complications, such as foot infections and ulcers. A common warning sign is wounds that do not seem to heal. If these are not attended to promptly, they can cause infections and turn into gangrene. Checking the feet daily is paramount in preventing further damage. If you have diabetes, it is a good idea to have regular checkups with a podiatrist who is trained to deal with the effects of diabetes on the feet.

Diabetic foot care is important in preventing foot ailments such as ulcers. If you are suffering from diabetes or have any other concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Comprehensive Foot & Ankle Center of South Jersey. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes affects millions of people every year. The condition can damage blood vessels in many parts of the body, especially the feet. Because of this, taking care of your feet is essential if you have diabetes, and having a podiatrist help monitor your foot health is highly recommended.

The Importance of Caring for Your Feet

  • Routinely inspect your feet for bruises or sores.
  • Wear socks that fit your feet comfortably.
  • Wear comfortable shoes that provide adequate support.

Patients with diabetes should have their doctor monitor their blood levels, as blood sugar levels play such a huge role in diabetic care. Monitoring these levels on a regular basis is highly advised.

It is always best to inform your healthcare professional of any concerns you may have regarding your feet, especially for diabetic patients. Early treatment and routine foot examinations are keys to maintaining proper health, especially because severe complications can arise if proper treatment is not applied.
